‘Oh No! Here Comes Trouble’ Drama Review.

There was a belief that when someone died with an unfinished business, they become a restless, and wondering souls in the afterlife. And in order for these souls to become peaceful and move on, they need to solve it and have some sort of closure. This theme was used in dramas, or movies, and to name a few, like the movie ‘Ghost’, and the American series ‘Supernatural’. And this drama that I will follows the theme as part of their plot.

‘Oh No! Here Comes Trouble’, a Taiwanese supernatural comedy and investigation drama tells the story about a young man, Pu Yi Yong, who gains a superpower after he was met with a tragedy that cost both his father and his grandfather’s life. And his power? Communicating with spirits, with the help of his own talent that was passed down by his ancestors, that is ‘Chinese Calligraphy’. Spirits came knocking on his door and say ‘Help Me!’. And so, with no other choice, Pu Yi Yong had to help them. This embarks his supernatural investigation journey, by teaming up with a police women named Chen Chu Ying and his high school nemesis turned assistant, Cao Guang Yan.

I will not write much details about the storyline as this is a highly recommended drama to watch. Since this is my own personal review, next I will write about my thoughts about the whole drama’s from a technicality/production perspective. Will start from casting, acting, then to the production.

Casting. I don’t really follow any of the actors, but throughout the episodes, everyone of the cast did amazing. Natural acting, comical but with the right amount of funny, not much, not less. A right amount of screentime introducing each of the character and the characters development which was well done. Chemistry wise, the whole cast have good chemistry with each and everyone of them and not just between the lead actor and another lead actress, but also with the rest of the support role too. All in all, good choice of actors (the actress playing the mother does resembles a bit like Pu Yi Yong), and well played of characters.

Production. What amazed me, other than this drama have all of what I like in a drama (Supernatural, Comedy, Investigation, Thriller) is that this drama was created AND directed by a woman, named Lin Kuan Hui. Throughout my experience of watching drama with such content, I would never think it would be from a woman. And that really makes me happy and proud. Anyways, moving along, directing wise, the storyline was carefully being put out. Smooth transition of storyline and the scene successfully delivered to the audience for a better understanding. A common-sense investigation where each of the puzzle pieces are carefully sought out.

The cinematography was simple yet is well thought off. As for the CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) used, I am not that very particular but as a regular audience, I find the CGI to be a bit clean, and that it flows well with the real object/subject in every scene.

In conclusion, this was the best drama (my own opinion) I have watched this year. A straightforward plot, that is easy to understand, funny but at the same time, tear jerking, suspense yet thrilling, overall, it is really an emotional roller coaster. The beauty of this, is the introduction of their almost extinct culture, ‘Calligraphy’, as a main weapon/tools to solving the mysteries and to help the spirits to move on.
