Aim For the Minimum

What and why do we need to aim for the minimum?

A minimum = target for the minimum output.

The reason to aim for a minimum is the assumption that the challenge primarily lies in initiating. When starting a behavior or effort proves to be the most arduous step in the process, the aim is to establish lower thresholds for effort to facilitate an easier initiation.

When setting goals, forming new habits, or planning for your life, there are several approaches you can take.

The first approach is to aim for the minimum output. This involves consistently doing at least a small amount so that, overall, you accumulate enough to make a significant impact. For example, committing to ten minutes of meditation daily, opting for the stairs at work for fitness, or learning a new word each day.

The second approach is to target the average output. Here, the focus is on setting a goal that may not be achieved every time, but if reached consistently, it can lead to significant progress. Examples include writing a new blog post weekly, reading two books monthly, or going to the gym four times a week.

The final approach is to concentrate on the maximum output. This involves channeling your efforts into surpassing a specific, challenging threshold that propels you to a higher level. Examples include achieving a one-rep maximum in weightlifting, engaging in deliberate practice, or striving to set a personal best in any endeavor.
